Popee the Performer Carnival (Uncensored Edition) (POPEE the ぱフォーマー 謝肉祭 無修正盤) is a desktop accessories CD-ROM for Windows. Despite the name, it doesn't appear that a "censored" version ever existed. The first press edition of the package included a Kedamono mask.[1]

The CD-ROM features wallpapers, screensavers, and other "impractical"/"useless" features. While using the software, a large 3D head of Popee, Kedamono, or Papi will appear, and you must click it to open up the menu.[2]

There are a total of 50 different wallpapers,[2] 10 different screensavers,[2] and 6 different programs that are just for fun, such as a useless calculator that shows Kedamono's masks instead of numbers.[2]

Software overview[]

Opening the software brings up a menu with Kedamono, Popee, Frog, and Papi on it. Hovering over a character displays Japanese text that says the characters name and then "page"—for example, hovering over Popee will display "ポピーノページ", which translates to "Popee's page". However, Frog is different. Hovering over Frog displays the text "終了します", which roughly translates to "EXIT". Clicking on Frog will close the program.

Selecting a character's page will bring up that character's head. Hovering over their features will give you four choices:

(Character name)の壁紙 — (Character name) Wallpapers

スクリーンセーバー — Screensavers

脱カ支援ント — Software to relax you

このぺージを閉じます — Close this page/back to main menu

Features[]

The CD-ROM, as stated above, has several different features.

Accessing the software[]

The easiest way to access the software is to download the software from this link and open up the program. When the software is opened this way, however, not all features work, and it may break. The best way to access the software is to get a Virtual Machine running Windows XP in Japanese and install the software on the VM.

Installing a VM[]

NOTE: This article assumes you've chosen Oracle's VirtualBox as your VM.

Follow the same instructions you get when you search for "Windows XP virtual machine"—some helpful examples include this article, this article, and this article. The only thing you need to change is the language you download XP mode in.

You can change the language by selecting "Japanese" in the drop-down menu. Be aware that doing so will change the language of the page itself. Clicking the orange button will take you to the download.

Installing a VM in Japanese is the same as installing a VM in English. Once the VM is ready, open it and set up Windows using the VM.

What's important is remembering what you've chosen as an administrator password. There is no login screen using this version of XP, just an administrator password entry. You will have to sign in this way every time you open the virtual machine unless you've set up a snapshot; it is advised not to do so until you have installed the software.

Installing the software[]

To install the software, the first thing you must do is enable Shared Folders. To do this, close the VM and go to settings. Find Shared Folders on the side bar and click on it. On the right is a tiny blue folder with a green + mark on it. Click that, and then select the folder you have the setup for the software in—if it was in a .zip file, you will need to extract it first.

The second thing is to download Oracle's Guest Additions. To do this, open the VM and log in, and from the desktop, go to the top toolbar on the VM and select Devices>Insert Guest Additions CD image. This will bring up an installer screen.

The installer itself is entirely in English—but the warnings are not. You will get several warning pop-ups in Japanese—don't worry about it. Click the left option with a (C) at the end, and do this every time it pops up.

You will have to reboot the machine, but this should not be an issue.

Once the machine is rebooted, log in again and head back to the desktop. Click the start button and find the slot on the right with the computer icon. Scroll down. Your folder should be under VirtualBox Guest Additions. Click on it, and setup should begin.

Setup is simple. click the buttons with an (N) and it'll take you to the next step until it's installed. The software will have an icon on the desktop.
