About

Marifa is Popee's younger sister, though it is possible they are not related by blood[2]. She only exists outside of the televised world[3]. She is 13 years old,[2] and appears to be a performer like the rest of her family. She is a trickster, and "probably" a girl.[2] While her family lives at the circus, she lives in a city.[4]

According to Wakako Masuda, Marifa was originally conceived when they were creating characters for the second season of the show. The reason Marifa never appeared in the show was due to either a limited budget or technical limitations.[5] It came down to her or Papi, and Papi was chosen over her because she isn't skilled enough to perform yet.[5][6]

Marifa's first (and only) appearance outside of social media is on page 8 of the Popee the Performer manga, where they introduce her and another character that doesn't appear in the show. Despite this, the first time her name was revealed was through the creator's twitter.

Appearance

Marifa has gray/silver hair and green eyes. She wears a blue hat decorated with two pink panda faces on either side of her head, a light blue and pink dress with frills on the sleeves and two small pompoms on the middle, purple stockings, and periwinkle colored boots with a lavender bottom. She also wears a tail, in similar fashion to her older brother. She seems to also wear a light lavender shirt under the dress.

Personality

Not much is known about Marifa, except that she is a trickster who feigns innocence in front of her brother, who believes that she is without fault. Popee's reasoning is that he can't possibly think his sister is anything other than a good person.[7] Kedamono is aware of her true nature, however.[8] Ryuji Masuda refers to her as a "sweet devil".[9] Marifa is innocent, though she is selfish.[10] Despite being a trickster, she is not violent like her brother.[11]

Trivia

  • Although it's unknown if this is also true in canon, in the parody Chinchikurin Marifa has a different biological mother than her brother, making them half-siblings.[12]
  • In Chinchikurin, Marifa and Papi's relationship is described as "delicate". Again, it's unknown if this is reflected in main canon.[13]
  • Marifa's Chinchukurin counterpart is Mariha Kuruwaya.
  • Her favorite food is pizza[14] and her favorite pizza topping is pineapple.[15]
  • Marifa's surname may be Paraphone, since she is Popee's sister and Paraphone is Popee's surname.[16] "Paraphone" is a real english word meaning "communication with the paranormal."[17]
  • Her favorite color is light blue.[15]
  • Her greatest fear is ugliness.[18]
  • Marifa plays the tambourine.[19]
  • Marifa visits the desert from time to time.[19]
  • Marifa's hobby is costume design and production, similar to her Chinchikurin counterpart.[20]
